Choosing a suitable tablet PC can be a difficult task, which manufacturer, how much memory, how much can I afford, or does it get a good write-up in the media. The whole process can be a nightmare experience for someone to comprehend. Since not all people have the same needs and since the tablet is not an upgradable device like a computer, the best way to go, is to find out the most important functions and parameters that you require from a tablet.

Here are some tips and guidelines to help you make your decision.

Tablet size

The first and most important decision you have to make, is about the tablet size. Tablets usually start from a 7 inch screen and go up to 10.1 or 9.7 inches. There are bigger sizes, but this is the most common range. The 7 inch tablets are the most portable ones and the lighter ones as well. Their drawback is their small screen, which means small size text, small pictures and a small gaming area. On the other hand, 10.1 or 9.7 do not have these drawbacks, but are more difficult to carry and are heavier. There are of course tablets in between, like the 8 or 9 inch tablets, which have something from both worlds. What is best for you, depends on your needs and your personal preferences. In any case, a visit to a shop and a hands-on experience would help you to make up your mind.

Screen type

There are 3 different screen types: standard definition, high definition and IPS. The basic and the cheapest is the standard definition. The high definition screen will give you more clarity in your text, videos and pictures. The best of all is the IPS screen which in addition to the high definition features, will give you higher brightness and very wide reading angles.

The processors are mainly distinguished by the number of cores: one, two, four etc. The more cores, the higher the speed. The execution speed also depends on the processor clock, which is expressed in GHz. If for example we have 2 processors with dual cores and the first is clocked at 1GHz and the second at 1.2GHz, then the second will be faster. Note though that the speed comes at a cost. The faster the processor, the sooner your battery will drain. As of today, a dual core is a good compromise.

Flash Memory

The flash memory is your permanent storage memory. The more you have the better it is. Every tablet usually comes with 4 or 8 or 16 or 32GB flash memory built-in. You can extend this memory by adding an SD card of up to 32GB. Then your total memory, will be the sum of the internal flash memory plus the SD card.

All tablets come with a front camera (usually 0.3MP), which is very useful for video conferencing. Some tablets have in addition a rear camera (usually 2MP) for taking photos and video.

Not many people pay attention to the RAM memory. Usually most tablets come with 512MB of RAM. This is enough for basic use, but if you want to run many application together, then you need more RAM, in this case 1GB of RAM is most suitable.

WiFi / 3G

All tablets support WiFi, some tablets support 3G through external 3G dongles and some others have built-in one or two SIM card slots. If you usually have access to WiFi, then 3G connectivity is not needed.

This word comes from Phone and Tablet and it denotes the high rising category of these devices, which usually are between 5 to 6 inches. It is up to your personal taste, if you want to combine both worlds in this inch range.

Bluetooth will connect your tablet with your mobile phone and your other Bluetooth devices, like your Bluetooth speaker.

GPS receiver along with a GPS application, will make your tablet a Navigator.

The HDMI port will let you connect your tablet with your TV, to enjoy a picture slideshow or a video via a large screen.

Tablets usually come with a marketplace application, which is either the Google Play provided by Google or another marketplace provided by another provider. You should consider the number of applications each marketplace has access to. The more available, the better it is.

After Sales Service

Last but not least, the after sales service that a company provides is just as important as the functionality and features of their product. It is very important that a customer can rely on a company’s after sales service to receive an immediate and effective response to any problem they might encounter with their purchase. The company must ensure that their customers are completely satisfied with every aspect of their after sales service whether it be a technical support issue that needs rectifying or a refund or replacement of a product that cannot be repaired.
